Located in Lenox, Massachusetts, the Tanglewood has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. Each July and August, the orchestra joins up with the Boston Pops on 500 beautiful acres in the Berkshire Mountains for a sizzling series that also features the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, James Taylor, and the Festival of Contemporary Music. The Tanglewood Music Festival celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2012 with big-name stars from the music world, including John Williams, the Boston Pops Laureate Conductor, the Grammy award-winning rock group Evanescence, Chevelle, and three-time Grammy award-winning rockers Train. Pop sensation Andy Grammer and singer/songwriter Mat Kearney from Nashville will open for Train. The grand finale on Labor Day weekend will be an “American Songbook” concert with the Boston Pops, Michael Feinstein, and Christine Ebersole being led by Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth and Family Conductor Thomas Wilkins.
In addition to the festival, Tanglewood boasts the Tanglewood Music Center, which is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer academy for advanced musical study. Established in 1940 by former Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Serge Koussevitzky, the world-renowned center delivers a special in-depth experience for exceptional burgeoning professional artists. Programs range from the Instrumental Program, the Vocal Arts Program, and the Composition Program to Piano Activities, The Orchestra Library Fellowship, the Audio Engineering Fellowship Program, and the Publications Fellowship. Students work with internationally acclaimed artists, such as Boston Symphony musicians, resident faculty members, and special guests.
