The innovative museum also boasts many firsts. In the 1930s, it was the first to commission two mobiles from Alexander Calder and, in the 1950s, it was the first to display the work of Norman Rockwell as well as pieces by such uncommon artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Ellsworth Kelly, Nancy Graves, and Red Grooms. During the 21^st-century, the acquisitions have centered on artists with connections to the Berkshires, including Gregory Crewdson, Peter Garfield, Morgan Bulkeley, Stephen Hannock, and Helen Febbo. Over the years, institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Guggenheim Museum have borrowed various objects.
